Serve & Return tells you what to say to get your little one talking — from the book you’re reading tonight and the little moments all day. It’s a coach for you, not another screen for your child, and it all runs on your iPhone. If something isn’t working or you have a question, we’re glad to help.

Common questions
What does the app actually do?
It hands you the words. Tell it the book you’re reading and it gives you three warm questions that get your child talking. Any time of day, tap what your child just did — pointed, babbled, told you a story — and it gives you a warm way to answer. It’s built on the idea that children grow language through back-and-forth talk and shared books.
Where does my information go?
Nowhere but your iPhone. Serve & Return has no servers and no accounts. Writing the questions, the story voice, and the personalization all happen on-device — try it in Airplane Mode and nothing changes. Nothing about your child ever leaves your phone.
Do I need Apple Intelligence?
The freshest questions are written on-device by Apple Intelligence, which needs a supported iPhone with it enabled in Settings. Without it, Serve & Return falls back to its own warm, built-in questions for any book — nothing breaks either way.
Does my child look at a screen?
No. Serve & Return is a coach for the grown-up. You read the questions and say them out loud — the app is for you, the talking is between you and your child.
What is Listen mode?
It’s an optional way to reflect on the back-and-forth of a reading session. Your child’s voice is analysed live, on your device, and is never recorded or stored — unless you choose to keep a recording, which then stays only on your phone.
What languages does it work in?
The whole app — interface and content — is available in English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, and Italian, and it follows your iPhone’s language. The questions it writes for your book come out in your language too.
How do backups work?
In Settings, choose Back up, set a passphrase, and pick a folder. The app writes an encrypted, passphrase-sealed copy there. Keep your passphrase safe — we can’t recover it, which is exactly the point. To restore, pick the backup file and enter the passphrase.
How do I delete everything?
Settings → Delete everything erases every child, moment, and first word from your device. Deleting the app removes all of it too.
